All-Year Winter Fun at the Icehouse Melbourne

September 15, 2017 by

Indeed Spring has sprung, but I say, only just. Just as dear Bitterly Cold Winter was reluctantly waving goodbye, we were invited to a Kid’s birthday skating party at the Melbourne Icehouse.

At first, I was doubtful about enjoying the whole experience. First, no one in the family has ever done ice skating before. I was sure, it would just be awkward attempts and embarrassing falls all the time. Second, the memory of the winter cold was still fresh and wintry fun wasn’t exactly my idea of fun. Anyway, we were going to try to have fun.

What helped alleviate our fears for embarrassment was the 15 minute skating basics lesson that was provided at the beginning. It was to teach beginners to gain balance, posture to move forward, how to turn around and what to do when you fall. A short one but was on point and helped us gain the confidence to glide around, though very slowly.

We had so much fun, we wanted to go back there regularly. Personally, as an adult without any sports inclination at all, I wanted to take an Adult’s beginner’s lesson ! What a progress (of thought), I might say ! 🙂

The Icehouse, also known as O’Brien Group Arena, is located in the entertainment and shopping precint of Docklands, nestled with other Melbourne popular spots such as the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, Wonderland Fun Park, Harbour Town and COSTCO. It has two olympic-size skating rinks, one is for the public and the other for hockey competions.

The Icehouse is one of only two ice skating rinks in Melbourne and the more popular between the two.

They offer holiday programs for kids and adults alike, but for those who are really keen, they accept enrolments every term.

An alternative weekend activity for those looking for something different.
